Go Ahead for 1400m Race Track at Menangle Park

January 2005

The NSW Harness Racing Club will go where no other metropolitan Australian harness racing has gone before by installing a 1400m racetrack as part of an ambitious redevelopment of its Menangle Park Complex...

Menangle Park Makeover

Menangle Park plans for permanent stabling and a 1400-metre racetrack are continuing and well advanced. The Club has engaged the services of architect Chris Dunkerly to design plans for the first stage of stabling accommodation.

"Campbelltown Council staff were receptive to the club's plans for Menangle Park when I met with them recently and Council now await a Development Application," Chief Executive John Dumesny said.

"We are currently looking at a proposal to build the permanent stabling in stages so we can assess the needs of trainers and the demand for more boxes as we go along," Dumesny said.

Whilst inspections have been made at a number of established stabling facilities including the Horsley Park Equestrian Centre, Inglis sales Complex and private properties, Mr Dunkerly and the Board Work Group now only need to visit the Canberra complex to finalize conceptual drawings before proceeding with plans for construction.

"Canberra requires inspection as it is a successful working harness racing establishment and whilst in the area an inspection of the new Goulburn facility may be beneficial," Dumesny said
Meanwhile, the first steps have been taken towards building a 1400-metre racetrack at the outer Sydney complex.

The design has been completed by internationally renowned track designer Charles Coon & Sons and the track has been pegged out to show the circumference of the track.

"While the track layout may look daunting in size, the Board is in no doubt that this is the future of the sport," Dumesny said.

A field trip to Menangle Park will be arranged allowing Club officials to liaise with all sections of the industry.

"An invitation will be extended to members, interested participants and others to inspect the site for the new track," Dumesny said.
